The Leopard 1A1 was the first major modernized variant of the West German Leopard 1 main battle tank (MBT), introduced in 1970. Upgraded from the initial production batches (Lots 1 through 4), the 1A1 standard addressed critical operational needs—primarily adding fire-on-the-move capabilities and slight protection upgrades to a vehicle originally designed to prioritize extreme mobility and firepower over heavy physical armour.

Shortly after the 1A1 deployment, the lessons of the 1973 Yom Kippur War highlighted how vulnerable light tank armour was to modern anti-tank missiles and kinetic rounds. In response, the Bundeswehr retrofitted these variants with Blohm & Voss add-on spaced armour plates bolted onto the turret and gun mantlet. Vehicles upgraded with this extra layer of protection were re-designated as the Leopard 1A1A1.

Some of these are still serving on the modern battlefield, although those are mostly 1A5 and later variants

Standard in 15mm, scalable to 28mm
