The Type 59 (Chinese industrial designation WZ-120) is a Chinese main battle tank that originally entered service in 1959. It was built as a licensed copy of the Soviet T-54A medium tank under technology transfer agreements signed between China and the Soviet Union in the mid-1950s.
The Type 59 tank played a crucial role in the latter half of the Vietnam War. Supplied by China to the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) / North Vietnamese Army, it marked a transition for North Vietnam from guerrilla warfare to conventional, heavy-mechanised operations
